Rebel Song 2009

by Conor Casby

When schoolgirl’s dread was in my blood
I read of ancient demons
“Haughey’s kind has gone for good
No need for me to flee, then.”
But then when I grew up, my fears
Were sadly not in vain,
Our first world country’s fucked and here’s
Damnation once again.

Damnation once again!
Damnation once again!
Coz Ireland’s fucked it up so here’s
Damnation once again!

We had a Celtic Tiger, true.
Its might was very mighty.
It brought us wealth, but oh boo hoo
Its might was also flighty
And while we borrowed for new cars
The tiger slunk to Spain
To hang out with Dub dealers
On probation once again.

Probation once again!
Probation once again!
We might as well go back on junk
Sedation once again… zzz

The first sign was the banks, coz they
were looking very shifty
The Times began to often say
that we should be more thrifty
The builders noticed less to build
And started to complain
We saw the Tiger had been killed
Starvation once again!

Starvation once again!
Starvation once again!
Now own brand pizza’s looking good
Desperation once again!

Bertie panicked, ran away
Said, “Brian, here’s a promotion!
Take the reigns this rainy day
Whilst I skip this commotion.”
Brian Cowen’s neck got thicker as
He prepared for mental strain
And now he wants to kick your arse
Over deflation once again.

Deflation once again!
Deflation once again!
But Ireland knows just how to cope
Taxation once again!

For guidance through these times, we need
A wise, empathic kingpin
Instead who did we choose to lead?
Motley gobshites from the sin bin.
An unelected Taoiseach who’s
puffed up with dense disdain
What that fucker needs around his ‘gools
Is an Alsation (or Great Dane)

Alsation or Great Dane!
Alsation or Great Dane!
Yes one of those clamped round his balls
Might help him understand our pain.

But what’s the point in blaming Fianna Fail?
We dug ourselves our own hole.
We filled ourselves that inept Dail,
We scored that fucking own goal.
We had the chance to protest, oh,
To riot, go insane!
Instead… well, I think you know.
Hesitation once again.

Hesitation once again
Frustration once again
Why is Ireland only happy in
Stagnation once again?

And as job loss flows like a river of blood
And Ireland gets anaemic
You might, rather than stem the flood,
Want to jump into the Lee, quick.
But wait, just hear what I contest
To keep us in the food chain!
I’ve written to England to suggest
Plantation once again

Plantation once again!
Plantation once again!
We tried, we failed, we can’t be trusted
with this nation once again.
